Chief Superintendent Oluyemi Ajayi the Deputy Police Force Spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He, however, said the Commissioner of Police was yet to brief them on what led to the event and the number of casualties resulting from the event.

A witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the city was thrown into chaos as people ran helter-skelter for cover with youth corps members in the area hiding in shops, uncompleted buildings and bushes.

During the bombings, three banks; UBA Damaturu, First Bank and Fidelity bank on Geshua Road were allegedly robbed and bombed. Three churches in the New Jerusalem area of the city; St Mary’s Catholic Church, ECWA and Living Faith Church, were bombed, with people jumping over the Catholic Church fence to escape from the vicinity.  The police station along Geshua road was also bombed.

“At a point in time the police were said to have been shooting into the air to scare away people,” our source said. “Apparently that is not true because at that point when the police were supposedly in charge, bombs still sounded at least 6 times.”

Another witness, who described this as “possibly having the highest number of casualties ever”, numerous dead bodies littered the streets this morning and the atmosphere was very tense.

At the moment, what led to the incident is still unclear, and no one has claimed responsibility for the bombings yet. However, Islamist sect, Boko Haram, have been known to operate in the Yobe area. Damaturu is about 130km away from Maiduguri, Borno State, where bombs were also detonated yesterday.

We think the Nigerian government needs to seek help from the international community before Boko Haram gets out of hand
